Presentation of La Borne Residencies
From 2024 to 2025, La Borne played host toJu Hyun Lee to allow her to experiment with Nicole Crestou.
A set of helmets fashioned in stoneware clay, created by Ju Hyun Lee in collaboration with ceramicist Nicole Crestou, initially question the position of the earth (inside-outside / bottom-top).
The point of departure was to design ceramic pieces for an artistic promenade, akin to a collective ritual in urban space or a parade where participants would wear the helmets. When creating them, they had to weigh the constraints of ceramics: their weight, how much they would shrink when fired, and the balance of the shape. Then, the helmets were topped off with horns, spikes and prongs, making them unique and showing how nature can be used for self-defence.
Turning a useful object, something designed to protect the head, into a symbolic, aesthetic object and setting it in motion within a performance creates an artistic expression in a specific public space and within a transitory time frame. The parade, which also refers to ancestral clay containers carried on the head, called for a certain choreography so that the walkers-dancers could familiarise themselves with the size of their headgear, so determining their personal space within the mass procession.

… Kouros
The artist lives and works in Humbligny (18-Cher).
It’s the story of a sidetrack that became a journey.
In the world inhabited by Dominique Coenen’s draped, figurative silhouettes, an offbeat collection has emerged: the walking Kouros’. These works, born from a desire to pare down the narrative in order to capture the energy of movement, appear striking the ground. From this impact emerge tapered faces, a discreet invitation to pareidolia, long kept secret in the studio as a reference to ancient Greek statues.
The path gradually took shape around this digression, fed by exchanges and external insights. After an initial public showing in 2022 at the Palais Jacques Cœur, in 2024 the Kouros changed scale. At nearly a metre tall, they now rival the stele. This evolution required combining the raw energy of chiselling with the technical skill of modelling large pieces, a risky undertaking that demands absolute confidence.
Then comes the suspense of firing in a wood-fired anagama kiln, a crucial stage for this artist from La Borne, who is passionate about the colours imparted by firing. Passing through the flames marks the culmination of the quest for material and presence.
