L’heure bleue
The artist lives and works in Gennes-Val-de-Loire (49-Maine-et-Loire).
“There is a moment in time when the world seems to hold its breath, called the blue hour. The blue running through my ceramics is not a colour, it is an impulse, a shiver, a vibration. It is held within the material, infusing it with its cold light and age-old silence. It tells the story of sediment, landslides and slow erosion that sculpt landscapes. It evokes hidden worlds, crystalline memories, the secret rhythms of life.”
Ever since he completed his training at EMA-CNIFOP 15 years ago , Benoît Pouplard has been building bridges between celadon glazes and polar ice. In the far north, he invents a geographical poem, Celadonia, a ceramic embodiment of Pytheas’ mythical Thule, ‘a place where the land and the sea are both in suspension together’. Taking his inspiration from paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, he imagines the tragedy of a landscape without any outlines, one where the boundaries between water, stone and air are blurred. Here, blue creeps in on tiptoes. It slides into hollows and clings to crevices. Each piece is an island, a crossed form, permeable to the invisible, open to the breath of the world, a fragment of a glacier, a shard of mineral time that seeks to retain the whisper of its origins.

“For nearly fifty years, my work has been part of a continuous exploration of the relationships between material, form and colour. My preferred medium for doing this is ceramics. I explore the balance between skill and unpredictability, rigour and experimentation. Each piece is the result of a process where shaping, glazing and firing are all part of the same open approach. Colour plays a central role and often end up determining the shape. I have never wanted to be confined to one type of work. My work is guided by curiosity and a desire to understand how shapes, materials and firing techniques can work together or clash. I love those moments of uncertainty when the elements have as much say as I do, when luck becomes my partner. After meandering through the labyrinth of possibility, it becomes clear that the object is telling me that the journey is complete. At least for now!
Exploration remains the guiding principle, always driven by the joy of discovery. Even today, each series is a new journey for me, a way of keeping the flame of my beginnings alive.”
