Jean Jacquinot
Une vie Céramique…
Jean Jacquinot was born in 1944 in Aulnay-sous-Bois.
In 1971, having worked in several different jobs (teaching, plastering, etc.), he opened his first studio in Chevreuse in the department of Yvelines. In 1975, he moved to the Gard region, then to the Hérault region in 1990. Over the course of his various moves, he built three wood-fired kilns based on different designs (Sèvres, Artigas, etc.). After thirty years spent in the south of France, in 2006 he moved to Neuilly-en-Sancerre in the Berry region. Here he built his fourth kiln, a very personal creation incorporating different design elements.

His glazed stoneware output was still utilitarian in style. The irregularities, additions and other marks served to celebrate a way of living that made life sing! A self-taught artist, he worked empirically, each firing informing the next. Between 1983 and 2017, Jean Jacquinot wrote numerous articles for the RCV (The Ceramics and Glass Review). He worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Dunkirk on the Dialogues ceramics collection (1994, 1995). He was the editor for Les faïences de Claude et Slavik Palley (2008), and he contributed to the book Céramiques et paysages with photographer Raymond Sauvaire (2006). As an artist who was altruistic and eager to promote ceramics, he became involved in various associations (Collectif National des Céramistes 1999, ACLB 2006, etc.). He was made an honorary member of Ateliers d’Art de France (2007) in recognition of his work in creating Terre de Solidarité.
He passed away on 27 June 2025.

”We are in the smoking room of a grand house; the man has left the room. Only the acrid smell of cigar smoke mingled with cold sweat lingers. A torn club chair sits in the centre of the room. On the wall, a ghostly landscape screams the silent story it conveys. Opposite me there is a little girl watching me. Her stocky build, her head tucked into her shoulders, her stubborn expression reveal a strong animalistic quality, immediately offset by the innocence of her porcelain complexion. Using her chubby fingers, she turns me around so that she can see my face. Her beautiful, deep, dark eyes stare into mine. She tells me about her secret world of steep paths passing through forests, thickets, couch grass and broom. Her world is populated by creatures with the heads of dogs, flies and crows, and the bodies of vipers, spiders and jellyfish. Her enormous, solitary world overwhelms and destroys her. This world she does not understand, yet has lived through, the world of incest given shape and substance by the adult she has become, and who I am.”
