Mathieu Casseau

Vernis d’argile

The artist lives and works in Douarnenez (Finistère – 29).

Mathieu Casseau is exploring his adult life at a design school, where he is completing his studies in ceramics. Clay and fire – a world he encountered in secondary school and is continuing to explore, reluctant to relinquish his childhood and childhood games, crafting dreams from next to nothing.
At the Maison de la Terre in Dieulefit, the courses he took were a confirmation of his life choices. Before settling in Douarnenez, he set up his first workshop in central Brittany, on the fringes of the Quénécan forest, where the good fairies introduced him to terra sigillata. Much like with wild mushrooms, you have to find the right spots on embankments and in ditches to uncover the best clay. In an autumn quest, terra sigillata creates a beauty with a mysterious radiance.
The taut forms are reminiscent of certain plants or their colours. The rigour of the lines is a key component of his approach, and this is enhanced through polishing with care. Despite his technical expertise, the unpredictability of firing is what creates the element of surprise. The hues of long-sedimented clays that have been truly fermented by time, are a distillation of wonder. Even with so little, terra sigillata is captivating. Fire reveals the sedimented earth and delivers a sense of the sublime that Mathieu has embraced, following in the footsteps of Pierre Bayle, Jean-Paul Azaïs and Christian Toublanc. These dedicated men have instilled beauty into his veins and brought joy to his adolescent soul, still caught between precision and the bohemian.

Des métamorphoses

The artist lives and works in Beaumes-de-Venise (Vaucluse – 84).

I make objects, often functional pieces, out of stoneware, porcelain and earthenware. I really enjoy the idea of using unique, precious objects in everyday life. I make my own glazes and adapt my ceramic clays. Recently, I have been incorporating fired and crushed workshop waste into the clay. I am fascinated by the process of creating objects from raw materials.

My work is mainly figurative and inspired by mythology. Humans create myths because they have existential questions, and this undoubtedly helps them to alleviate their fear of death. From decorated caves to the present day, we can find evidence of these stories in every civilization: a range of objects, poetry, music, etc.
Myths travel along with humans and pass from one continent to another, from one religion to another. There is a great deal of fluidity. They are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for creativity.
I feel linked to the creators of all these civilisations. I am just one grain of sand among the other grains of sand on this beautiful beach called humanity.
